Inside the mill

Alfred Brown

Established in 1915 by Herbert Brown, Alfred Brown initially focused on weaving fabrics for military, police, and fire services. Thriving in Leeds, Yorkshire, amid the boom in garment manufacturing, the company supplied large quantities of cloth for the ready-made suit market. Renamed Alfred Brown (Worsted Mills) Ltd in 1952, it gained recognition in London's West End among tailors and retailers. In the 1970s and 1980s, the third generation, including Alfred's descendants Peter and David Brown, expanded the brand globally.
